Not very often am I confronted with my ignorance, but before I walked into the showrooms of United Tile inside the phenomenon called The Home Design Center, I had not a clue what was going on there. Having driven by it hundreds of times since its opening in 2007, I just assumed it was another pricey place to buy lamps, furniture, and so forth.
But imagine a place where you can walk in with a vague idea of what you want to do in your new or existing home and walk out knowing all you need to know about flooring—tile, carpet and hardwood; there are also plumbing products and appliances, marvelous whole kitchen designs, home theaters and security, a sewing center where consultants lead you through your needs for window treatments, and there’s one entire area devoted exclusively to lighting. The Home Design Center is the only business in our locale that can help you complete your entire project, plus experts to do the work for you!
It’s like a home builders’ mall, and not just for homeowners. Owners Sid Menard and Mark Wilburn welcome your builder and/or architect to come in as well. Or, if you’re a dyed-in-the-wool do-it-yourselfer, they’ll sell you the products and tell you how to install them.
A locally owned and operated business since 1948, United Tile got bumped around at least twice due to the expansion of I-49 and its rights-of-way. Finally, in 2002 Menard and Wilburn bought what was until then strictly a “tile store” and began turning United Tile into what you see today when you go to the Home Design Center on East 70th Street, just across from the Clarion Hotel.
At first it might seem as if United Tile sells everything you need, but they don’t. According to Sid Menard, they only provide what they know about, which includes – besides every kind of tile imaginable – wood flooring, carpet and cabinetry (tops as well as complete kitchen cabinet setups). Once your United Tile professional has made those “visions into creations,” he/she introduces you to one of the many professional consultants in appliances, kitchen development, furniture, or one of the many dream-filled displays within the interior of the Home Design Center.
Remember, not only is your builder, architect, or contractor warmly welcomed, the Home Design Center even has a special room where your children can entertain themselves with TV and games, allowing you to take your time exploring your dreams.
Menard emphasizes that he understands there are some great anxiety factors that come in with the customer, such as – in the case of a remodeling job – how long and how messy is the job going to be? He readily admits, yes, there is going to be some mess, but his employees come directly from the construction industry and are carefully trained to keep the disruption of your home atmosphere to the absolute minimum.
The vendors displaying inside the Home Design Center – including Allen Millwork, Morrison Plumbing and Appliances, Kitchen Design Group, Home Theater Design, Sew Elegant, and Southern Lighting Design, along with United Tile – are unique in that practically everything you need is available immediately from the 48,000-square-foot warehouse that is attached to the Home Design Center.
And the Home Design Center is still in growth mode. There is office and showroom space available for particular types of vendors with exclusivity restrictions so that if your product is garage doors, for example, you would be the only garage door dealer in the Center. There is space available for businesses like closet organizers or an interior design firm; and builders themselves are welcome to set up their business offices in the Center.
While the motto of United Tile is “Turning Visions into Creations,” the overall mission of everyone at the Home Design Center is to make it as easy and anxiety-free as possible for you to have the home of your dreams.
