Recently someone asked me. What is your BEST Christmas gift ever?
It’s funny how certain questions act as “time machines.” They have the power to transport you back in time to a location, a place, or an encounter.
One question and then in warp speed we are back in the moment. That simple question takes me back to 1972. I was ten years old and I just opened one of my best gifts ever; a Daisy BB gun. After all the morning festivities, Dad and I headed to the woods for a quick safety course and and afternoon of target practice. What happened next could have been straight out of a scene of “The Christmas Story” with Ralphie and his dad.
I raised that firearm, sighted in the target, and gently squeezed the trigger. The BB hit dead center and then ricocheted straight back to hit my dad square in the forehead. My dad didn’t know if he should be mad or laugh. It was classic!
That simple question kept digging and memories kept surfacing. After several decades of memories, I came to the conclusion my best GIFT ever really wasn’t about a present that was wrapped and stuffed under a tree. When I started thinking back through all the years of “stuff,” I really couldn’t remember but one or two actual gifts. What I did remember was the family, the meals, and the fun we all had together. The sImple moments of family!
Simple... it really should be our objective during the holidays. We can’t eliminate the lines and the traffic but we can decide No debt, No stress, No pressure, No competition. Years down the road, when someone ask your family, “What is the BEST Christmas gift ever?” The answer probably won't be the “wrapped” kind, the “bought” kind, the “money” kind... it will be the simple moments of time with family. Make a family memory this holiday season. Keep it simple!
