Cory Ryan and Elizabeth Morales launched their new show on 96.5 KVKI back in March.
There’s a new morning show in town. Cory Ryan and Elizabeth Morales launched their new show on 96.5 KVKI back in March. They are both Shreveport natives, and have a passion for local radio. Their long-time friendship comes across on air, and brings an entertaining dynamic perfectly suited for a morning radio show.
They took over from Robert and Erin, who moved over to the KEEL morning news. As the new hosts put it, this was a great move for both teams.
Elizabeth Morales: “Erin wanted to do news.”
Cory Ryan: “And she took Robert with her. Erin’s passion is news. She’s doing what she loves. The show that they’re doing over at KEEL is great. It’s wonderful for them and for us.”
As the new hosts of the KVKI morning show, Cory and Elizabeth are doing more than just picking up where the show left off. This is a whole new experience for listeners.
EM: “We are totally different team and dynamic than they are. We are also a different demographic.”
The show is geared toward young moms and families. Being that theirs is a morning show, it is the perfect thing to listen to on a morning commute or sitting in the carpool line at your kid’s school.
EM: “That’s the thing, we both have kids. So we are literally the people we are talking to. We are working parents. We have the day-to-day stuff like everybody else does. So, we know we can put ourselves in that and that our listeners are identifying with us.”
CR: “A lot of radio shows are dirty. But we are not. If my daughter is listening to me, the last thing I want her to ask me is ‘Daddy what’s a such and such?’”
In addition to being family friendly, the show is completely authentic. There are no smoke and mirrors.
CR: “There are no writers. We write a basic outline of the show, but that’s it. If a topic comes up we may go and talk about something totally different than the outline.”
EM: “We don’t stage anything. A lot of radio stations stage stuff, but we don’t stage anything.”
In just the short time they’ve been doing the show, Cory and Elizabeth have already had some pretty crazy moments.
CR: “We were talking about haunted houses and a woman called. She started telling us about the ghosts that live in here house like Chucky and all this.”
EM: “For real ghosts.”
CR: “Yeah, and she said, ‘Y’all can come over.’ We said, ‘There’s no way we are coming over.’ But it was such a good moment between me, Elizabeth, and the listener. And people were calling in saying, ‘Is this woman for real?’”
In an age of digital media and satellite radio, Cory and Elizabeth bring a fresh local perspective to morning radio.
EM: “We like to have fun. We don’t want to sit in here at 5 a.m. and bore our listeners. That would bore us to death, much less our listeners. We like to share our personalities, and we laugh a lot… a lot.”
CR: “We’re local, we’re entertaining, and we play music that people our age want to hear.”
EM: “You’re going to hear things that you can listen to with your kids in the car… plus, you’re going to have a good time.”
You can check out their fun family-friendly show Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on 96.5 KVKI. Also, go to www.965kvki.com for more from the show including videos and links to their Facebook page.
