Haughton has a rhythm of its own. A musical beat felt throughout the community. Shana Houston wanted to capitalize on that sound and make it better, so she opened the Haughton School of Music.
Houston is a former middle school music teacher who graduated from Louisiana Tech in 2000. She has been teaching music for more than 13 years.
“People would always approach me and ask me if I knew instructors for other instruments. I could see that there was a need for musical tutors in this area, and I wanted to provide all that under one roof,” Houston said. That is how the Haughton School of Music began. It officially opened in 2013.
The school caters to lessons for piano, oboe, drums, guitar, saxophone and several other instruments. They also offer voice lessons. Currently, the school has 65 private students, and 20 students enrolled in Kindermusik. Kindermusik is offered to younger children with two options: Sing and Play for birth to 2 years old, or Laugh and Learn for 3- and 4-year-olds. These programs are offered in group classes for caregivers and their babies.
Haughton School of Music may be starting out small but it continues to grow as more people learn of its existence. Houston is always looking for more instructors and students to teach. She believes a good age to start learning is about 6 years old.
Carl Harris, resident guitar instructor, started perfecting his passion for music while attending church. He found teaching to be very rewarding. He not only wants his students to excel in their instrument of choice, he also wants them to develop the same passion for music that he has.
“Music transforms people and brings out the best in them no matter what situation they face in life,” he said.
“I would love to continue expanding and one day open a large school where all performing arts are taught,” Houston said. “We want students to gain the skills they need to do whatever they want in the musical world. We work with families to make sure we can schedule all students in the same time period so there is less pressure on the family.”
