Artport, a local and regional art exposition housed at Shreveport Regional Airport, is preparing for the new 2015 exhibit themed “Flying Colours” and making a public call for entries to fill the open artist positions. New artists are welcome and encouraged to submit their entries by July 3. The Artport exhibit is returning to the corridors of the Shreveport Regional Airport. Opening night reception is slated for April 2, 2015. Already, approximately 80 returning local and regional artists have been confirmed for the show.
Due to the growing interest among new artists in the upcoming show, and the limited amount of wall space at the venue, Artport has established a jury committee to determine the eligibility of new artists wishing to participate. The jury is comprised of a diversified group of individuals reflecting the art community, art consumers, area business professionals and the Artport president. Artists who participated in the previous Artport 2012 show have been granted first right of refusal to enter the show again and are exempt from the jury process. The jury will fill the remaining positions available and notify these individuals through written correspondence. Once all artists are confirmed the theme rules and guidelines for pickup of tiles and canvases will be provided.
“We welcome back our returning artists, and look forward to the local and regional response on the open call for entries.” said Cindy Smith, Artport President. “Those who have a love for the arts are encouraged to seek out this opportunity as a new and rewarding endeavor. Artport exist for the aspiring and professional artists, and everyone in between.”
In order to be considered for juried selection, each artist should submit a two-paragraph biography and a commemorative collection of the artist’s work to include up to 3-5 samples. If selected, Artport artists also are responsible for securing a sponsorship of their works in the amount of $200. The sponsorship may be a business or individual, or combination thereof. The sponsors will be recognized in the 2015 Artport color catalog for sale opening night, and event handouts and signage.
The sponsorship is not optional and must be paid in full by no later than July 24. In addition, Artport artists will be required to submit a separate work of art on a 6x6 ceramic tile to be auctioned at the opening reception. Tiles will not be mailed to artists; and the artists who do not submit a tile will forego entry into the show. All proceeds of these tiles will benefit a nonprofit agency in the Ark-La-Tex region. In years past, Artport raised over $75,000 for charity through this event.
“Artport has served the community in a number of fashions,” Smith said. “For the airport and travelers to and from the area, it is a beautification project that showcases the local and regional culture and talents, in a secured, high-traffic gallery atmosphere. For the artists, Artport is an opportunity to show and sell their work, while networking with others who share their passion for the arts. The theme of the show always generates such enthusiasm amongst the group, and I am always in awe of the interpretative creativity and execution. For Kalmbach Smith Meadows, as the host company, it provides an opportunity to give back to the community and assist Artport in the continuation of one of the largest art exhibits in the country and the only revolving art display in a United States Airport.”
All new entries should contact an Artport representative at Kalmbach Smith Meadows 318.227.8611 with any questions. The two-paragraph biography and three to five samples of art work should be submitted via email to email@example.com.
Entries submitted via Dropbox or other shared softwares are acceptable if files are too large, prohibiting deliverable email. Deadline for all new entries is July 3.
The work will be juried and all entries will be notified via mail or email correspondence of acceptance. Once all artists are confirmed the theme rules and guidelines for pickup of tiles and canvases will be provided.
Those visiting the Shreveport Regional Airport can look forward to an entirely new showing of positive, thematic artwork. The 2015 show theme “Flying Colours” will be reflected in the interpretation, as well as the unique format for display. The exhibit is sure to entertain and inspire.
